Day 13, 23 July (Distance Biked 132.9 miles): The first half of the day I covered until the sandwich shop in the last blog. I rode a lot of trails last night leading into and out of Chicago. Somehow, I thought I might have had a chance at one of the few hostels in the downtown area after midnight; of course they were all booked. I wanted to push out of Chicago to find a safe place to sleep, so I spent nearly four hours winding through city streets and city trails. I ultimately pushed out far enough from Chicago on the Great Western Trail and I found a secluded spot off the trail near a power sub-station. The day is kind of foggy in my mind, but there are a few things that stand out. I was eating a sandwhich outside of a gas station during sunset and mistook sunblock on my fingers for mayo from the sandwhich. My phone had enough of the ride and thought it could fly, luckily the pieces fit back together and the function is intact. I lost my only hat that I could wear to cover my messy hair when I take off my bike helmet. Everything that I am carrying now smells unpleasant, time for laundry. I bought a Go pro camera before leaving and haven’t used it yet, I just keep taking photos with my camera, as if you couldn’t tell.
