The Appalachian Trail (AT) Through Hike

I am currently aboard an AMTRAK train heading to Gainesville, Georgia to begin my through-hike of the Appalachian Trail. After I completed my D.C. to Alaska bike ride, I realized I could benefit from a longer-duration effort. My friend, Justin Held, talked of section hiking the trail during my stay with him on my D.C. to Alaska trip. The thought of hiking for 5+ months made sense in helping me prepare and gain perspective for my 2020 effort. I put all my things in storage last month and closed out my apartment in Anchorage. After a brief visit with my family in the D.C. area, I’m on a midnight train to Georgia. I hope to finish the hike before the Northern terminus, Mt. Katahdin in Maine, closes around on or before 15 October. I’ll take a little break upon reaching Harper’s Ferry and visit my family.  Additionally, I’ll evaluate my progress based on my pace up to that point and determine if I need to skip ahead to Mt. Katahdin and work my way back to Harper’s Ferry to complete the whole trail.  I have been challenged, to say the least, by the technical aspects of presenting a coherent blog format. Maybe someday I’ll be able to better organize it, but it probably won’t happen during this hike. I promised during my bike trip to outline my 2020 concept, but I failed to deliver. I wanted to wait until I could consult with an organization dedicated to peace on the Korean Peninsula. After some thought, I believe I can outline my ideas during this hike and seek advice of such an organization after finishing my hike.

  1. Justin is my Son. He still speaks of you on occasion and we both wonder what your next venture would be.
    God speed.

    1. Hi Jay, thank you for your support. I’m on my 4th day of hiking The Appalachian Trail now and I am having a great time. I’ve been lucky in meeting people so far to make the hike enjoyable.I planned to make it to Ohio in October and I look forward to meeting you then.
